Email and Internet

No time provision is made for the development of skills needed to use email or Internet within these plans. In the context of our small, independent specialist school, email is a main communication route between our pupils and their parents, siblings and friends at home and at other schools. There is, therefore, considerable enthusiasm for the activity and the skills are ‘shown’ rather than taught in the informal context of evening free time. This is made particularly easy by the web-based email facilities provided on the school LAN to which all pupils have access using their own user name and password. The network home page has a direct link to the email system and is available at initial log on. Having accessed the email area, pupils go through a second level of security with the same user name and password and their home address is written into their personal address book as part of the year start administration tasks. Any other addresses they add to their own address book as required.

Pupil access to the World Wide Web is achieved through the same home page, which offers the usual facilities to enter known Web addresses and has permanent links to the BBC home page and the better-known search engines (Yahoo UK, Google, Dogpile, AltaVista, Yahooligans).

Clearly all incoming and outgoing communications are put through a ‘censorship’ filter, which checks text and web sites against a list of keywords. Our Internet service provider ensures that sites that offer purchasing facilities are only accessible to teachers and we allow chat room access to no one. Parents and children are informed of this.
